Underwater Photography: Experimenting

This is my first go at trying out underwater photography with stuff I could find at home, but in September I will be starting at Falmouth Uni where I will be doing a underwater photography course using the best equipment, but for now I used a glass vase and my compact camera. I just wanted to know if the idea would work and I feel that it did, but still have to experiment with it with a couple more shoots.

Below are some of the photographs.

The main problem I had was that even though the water looked clear from above the surface, below it was very murky and I could not use the flash because it would reflect off the glass vase.
I would like to continue with this idea through the summer. I also have other ideas that I am starting soon and will do blog posts about them.

Exmoor River Water Experimenting

A couple of weeks ago I went up to Exmoor, I went out with no real plan, but it was a nice sunny day. I did not see much wildlife and took more shots of the landscape, but was not happy with the photographs, until I stopped at a river where I decided to experiment with shutter speeds on my camera to create a different effect to the water in the middle of the river was a large rock which I used to help show the motion in the water. below are my results, which I am happy with:

First I tried the shot with the shutter speed at 1/13 seconds, without using an object to help show the movement of the water.

These next two photographs I wanted to use the rocks and stones to help show the movement of the water, with the first image (below) I used a shutter speed of 1/25 seconds, which I liked but wanted the water movement more misty.

So with this photograph I tried the shutter speed at 0.5 seconds which shows greater motion in the water and I like how you can see more of the rocks under the water.

Here I tried to show the detail of the rocks because I liked the moss and the sunlight at the top of the rock.

Soon I am planning to do a lot more post to the blog about projects and more wildlife and experimenting.

Exmoor and Starling

On the first of January I we on to Exmoor with my family for a walk, it was a lovely sunny day but it was freezing! I wanted to show Exmoor's beautiful landscape but also show the waterlogged moor from the rain we have been having. As we started to make our way home, I saw a big flock of birds in the distance and was not sure what they were until I realised they were starling! which I have only seen in large numbers on the Somerset Levels. I was able to make some nice images with nice light and I tried to get the starlings wings lit up but the sun and show the numbers of starling that were there.

Below are the results from the shoot.

This is my favourite photograph from the shoot with the starling performing and the sheep missing the show and looking towards me.
